Samorost flash game

This is a very entertaining if a bit surreal flash game and should keep you entertained over Christmas if all you get is another novelty tie or underwear! The hero Samorost has his dog kidnapped by aliens and must travel to their world to get him back. The backgrounds and interactivity with this flash game are very trippy and surreal. This game rightly won the designers a 2007 Webby Award!

Have a play around with this. The images below are taken from Samorost 2. Click on the links and try to solve the puzzles to get that dog back! Great fun! You can play online or download from http://amanita-design.net

Acrobots V Feed The Head!

AddThis Social Bookmark Button

This application is quite entertaining. The Acrobots almost seem to have a personality as they wildly sucker anything their little suckers can grab onto! Increase gravity or turn their world upside down make plus them appear and disappear! Should be distracting for all of 5mins!

Slightly more distracting is the application 'Feed the head' which is found at http://www.feedthehead.net/ pull the nose off the head a few times a feed it with balls tosee what happens! Has the feel of being trapped in the Beatles Yellow submarine film!

Yeti bubbles (I suspect Yeti balls has more of a ring to it!)

AddThis Social Bookmark Button

Need a distraction thats going to have you spending the whole afternoon in a trance much like Tetris? Well Yeti bubbles or Yeti balls as I prefer to call it could be your answer! It's very distracting and will have you whittling away at least 1/2 an hour!

It's suitably festive with the ice and snow and the cute Yeti and penguin looking on and is of course addictive as many arcade games are!

Thinking about this game however Penguins are restricted to the Southern hemisphere and the Yeti is reported from the Himalayas so thats a little misleading lol!

You can download this arcade game here for free CLICK HERE

Odd facts that happen to be true

AddThis Social Bookmark Button

No fancy graphics for this review of a 'distracting' website however this site will save you from boredom as some of the trivia listed here is endlessly fascinating and is the kind of thing that sparks controversy in the bar or office or at the dinner table. I'd recommend memorizing just a few of these amazing facts to sprinkle into the conversation over Christmas and you wont be bored!

Odd facts that happen to be true

Here are a few samples of some of the facts on this trivia site:

The very first bomb dropped by the Allies on Berlin in World War II killed the only elephant in the Berlin Zoo.

The name Wendy was made up for the book Peter Pan. There was never a recorded Wendy before.

The first CD pressed in the US was Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the USA."

The original name for butterfly was flutterby.

The first product Motorola started to develop was a record player for automobiles. At that time, the most known player on the market was Victrola, so the called themselves Motorola.

My favorite has to be the gem

Shaggyfrom scooby Doo is a vegetarian by force. He never gets to eat meat in the show. That is because Casey Kasem is a vegetarian and requested that Hanna Barberra make Shag one also.

Have fun exploring this one!

Soda creature constructor

AddThis Social Bookmark Button

'Sodaconstructor is a construction kit for interactive creations using masses and springs. By altering physical properties like gravity, friction, and speed, curiously anthropomorphic models can be made to walk, climb, wriggle, jiggle, or collapse into a writhing heap.'

To be honest I've had a play with this online and I couldn't get the hang of it! However it's like Meccano or Leggo online once you get into it and create a creature that works your hooked! I imagine that it's very distracting and if you do get the hang of it you'll never be bored again (you can be a God! I wonder if this is how our world started...Hmmm Matrix anyone?)

It is almost disturbing as you watch your creature writhe around trying to get a foot hold and start walking so you end up poking and prodding and changing gravity or muscle contractions until your thing gets up and starts to edge its way across the screen. Immediately you feel like Dr Frankenstein or God depending on your temperament!

My favorite creature that someone else had created and left behind was carefulslug but I think I almost killed it immediately by switching off gravity (it hit the top of the screen and when I switched gravity back on it hit the bottom of the screen and could no longer walk...I felt guilty and switched it off (put it out of it's misery!)...

I feel a bit dirty and guilty now...like when your a kid and you forget to feed the goldfish and they die and you suspect it was your fault and you see them gasping at you in the darkness of your dreams...OK I made that last bit up but you get the picture! Perhaps this is how God feels?

Do the starving, lost and lonely haunt his dreams?

There is a gallery of creatures that people have created and some of them are pretty weird, like the kind of things you find at the bottom of the sea or alien lifeforms clinging to some volcanic vent beneath the water on the moon of Europa! Have a go but come back and show me your creature!

Distract yourself with a good read this Xmas. Book review: The Xmas files. The Philosophy of Christmas by Stephen Law

AddThis Social Bookmark Button

Last year I had to reveiw this book and I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's the kind of book that you just cant help reading out extracts of much to the annoyance of everyone around the remains of the Christmas Turkey!

The author asks in a secular society, does Christmas mean anything anymore? As we stuff ourselves with plumped-up turkeys, unwrap the latest useless gadget, and gather round the family tree, what real relevance does the festive season have and why do we perpetuate it? "The Philosophy of Christmas" is designed to be a fun book but one underpinned by an exploration of serious philosophical issues. The way we celebrate Christmas says a lot about the way we relate to each other, our society and values.

There were some bits of the book I took issue with for example Santa's outfit was red and green and many other colors in many cultures before the coca Cola company got hold of him so it isn't strictly true that Coca Cola hijacked Santa!

Stephen Law also takes a look at such things such as the virgin birth (David Hume's theories on miracles), Bertrand Russell's turkey, the existential angst of Santa, and peace on earth to produce a humourous, varied and thought-provoking collection. Click below to find it in the distractions - Amazon store...
