Amazing striped icebergs

Icebergs in the Antarctic area sometimes have stripes, formed by layers of snow that react to different conditions.

Blue stripes are often created when a crevice in the ice sheet fills up with meltwater and freezes so quickly that no bubbles form.

When an iceberg falls into the sea, a layer of salty seawater can freeze to the underside. If this is rich in algae, it can form a green stripe.

Brown, black and yellow lines are caused by sediment, picked up when the ice sheet grinds downhill towards the sea.

Amazing footage of a flying fish off southern tip of Japan.

This fish was completely airborne for 45 seconds the animal was seen travelling parallel to a ferry and the footage was shot by an NHK crew as it travelled to Yakushima Island.

Apparently there are some 40 species of "flying fish" known as Exocoetidae (scientific family name). The animals are found worldwide in warmer waters.

3) If you are surrounded by sea you are an Island . If you don't have sea all round you, you are incontinent.

4) Sharks are ugly and mean, and have big teeth, just like Emily Richardson. She's not my friend no more.

5) A dolphin breaths through an arsehole on the top of its head.

6) My dad goes out in his boat, and comes back with crabs. (Emily Burniston age 5)

7) When ships had sails, they used to use the trade winds to cross the ocean. Sometimes, when the wind didn't blow, the sailors would whistle to make the wind come. My brother said they would be better off eating beans.

8) I like mermaids. They are beautiful, and I like their shiny tails. How do mermaids get pregnant?

REAL AIRLINES ATTENDANTS' QUOTES

Occasionally, airline attendants make an effort to make the "in-flight safety lecture" and their other anouncements a bit more entertaining. Here are some real examples that have been heard or reported:

There may be 50 ways to leave your lover, but there are only 4 ways out ofthis airplane...

After landing: "Thank you for flying Delta Business Express. We hope you enjoyed giving us the business as much as we enjoyed taking you for a ride."

"As the plane landed and was coming to a stop at Washington National, a lone voice came over the loudspeaker: "Whoa, big fella. WHOA!"

From a Southwest Airlines employee.... "Welcome aboard Southwest Flight XXXto YYY. To operate your seatbelt, insert the metal tab into the buckle, and pull tight. It works just like every other seatbelt, and if you don't knowhow to operate one, you probably shouldn't be out in public unsupervised.In the event of a sudden loss of cabin pressure, oxygen masks will descendfrom the ceiling. Stop screaming, grab the mask, and pull it over your face. If you have a small child traveling with you, secure your mask before assisting with theirs. If you are traveling with two or more small children, decide now which one you love more. Weather at our destination is 50 degrees with some broken clouds, we'll try to have them fixed before we arrive. "Your seat cushions can be used for flotation, and in the event of an emergency water landing, please take them with our compliments."

"Once on a Southwest flight, the pilot said, "We've reached our cruising altitude now, and I'm turning off the seat belt sign. I'm switching to autopilot, too, so I can come back there and visit with all of you for therest of the flight."

"As you exit the plane, make sure to gather all of your belongings. Anything left behind will be distributed evenly among the flight attendants. Please do not leave children or spouses."

"Last one off the plane must clean it."

And from the pilot during his welcome message:

"We are pleased to have some of the best flight attendants in the industry... Unfortunately, none of them are on this flight...!"

Another flight attendant's comment on a less than perfect landing: "We ask you to please remain seated as Captain Kangaroo bounces us to the terminal."

An airline pilot wrote that on this particular flight he had hammered his ship into the runway really hard. The airline had a policy which required the first officer to stand at the door while the passengers exited, smile,and give them a "Thanks for flying XYZ airline." He said that in light of his bad landing, he had a hard time looking the passengers in the eye, thinking that someone would have a smart comment. Finally everyone had gotten off except for this little old lady walking with a cane. She said, "Sonny, mind if I ask you a question?" "Why no Ma'am," said the pilot, "what is it?"The little old lady said, "Did we land or were we shot down?"

Part of a flight attendant's arrival announcement: "We'd like to thank you folks for flying with us today. And, the next time you get the insane urgeto go zipping through the skies in a pressurized metal tube, we hope you'll think of us here at US Airways."

Need a distraction thats going to have you spending the whole afternoon in a trance much like Tetris? Well Yeti bubbles or Yeti balls as I prefer to call it could be your answer! It's very distracting and will have you whittling away at least 1/2 an hour!

It's suitably festive with the ice and snow and the cute Yeti and penguin looking on and is of course addictive as many arcade games are!

I imagine that it's very distracting and if you do get the hang of it you'll never be bored again (you can be a God! I wonder if this is how our world started...Hmmm Matrix anyone?)

It is almost disturbing as you watch your creature writhe around trying to get a foot hold and start walking so you end up poking and prodding and changing gravity or muscle contractions until your thing gets up and starts to edge its way across the screen. Immediately you feel like Dr Frankenstein or God depending on your temperament!

My favorite creature that someone else had created and left behind was carefulslug but I think I almost killed it immediately by switching off gravity (it hit the top of the screen and when I switched gravity back on it hit the bottom of the screen and could no longer walk...I felt guilty and switched it off (put it out of it's misery!)...

I feel a bit dirty and guilty now...like when your a kid and you forget to feed the goldfish and they die and you suspect it was your fault and you see them gasping at you in the darkness of your dreams...OK I made that last bit up but you get the picture! Perhaps this is how God feels?

There is a gallery of creatures that people have created and some of them are pretty weird, like the kind of things you find at the bottom of the sea or alien lifeforms clinging to some volcanic vent beneath the water on the moon of Europa! Have a go but come back and show me your creature!

I may print them off and use them as greetings cards! Last year I had to reveiw this book and I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's the kind of book that you just cant help reading out extracts of much to the annoyance of everyone around the remains of the Christmas Turkey!

The author asks in a secular society, does Christmas mean anything anymore? As we stuff ourselves with plumped-up turkeys, unwrap the latest useless gadget, and gather round the family tree, what real relevance does the festive season have and why do we perpetuate it? "The Philosophy of Christmas" is designed to be a fun book but one underpinned by an exploration of serious philosophical issues. The way we celebrate Christmas says a lot about the way we relate to each other, our society and values.

There were some bits of the book I took issue with for example Santa's outfit was red and green and many other colors in many cultures before the coca Cola company got hold of him so it isn't strictly true that Coca Cola hijacked Santa!

Stephen Law also takes a look at such things such as the virgin birth (David Hume's theories on miracles), Bertrand Russell's turkey, the existential angst of Santa, and peace on earth to produce a humourous, varied and thought-provoking collection. This is a great web site to inspire awe at the wonders of the natural world. Clouds are fractal beings much like ourselves and live in the gaps between chaos and order. This is a fantastic distraction and a real boredom saver.

It seems a bit lame at first but once you get into it it grows legs and your off discovering what you can do with the limited tools and realizing how vast the project is it kind off gets addictive, they should have a voting system for most popular doodle etc Have a go when your at a loose end and bored or just curious!

Here are five of my lame efforts...although I'm amazed that they are still there given that I did these about many years ago which does show that this project has real innovative backing and potential.

There are drawings which I did whilst in Australia which I am sure still exist some where on this site but I cant locate them. That would be strange...if all I left behind were a few doodles in the electronic sand!

But hey to be honest isn't that all humanity has ever done doodled in the sand? We are too arrogant for our own good but at the same time we define the universe and make it what it is...

OK so these doodles may not be Manga but have a go yourself and send them back to 'Distractions' perhaps we will have a vote winner takes all!

Scientist explores distractions but gets distracted

The article below (Click here for full text at Sciencedaily.com) from ScienceDaily (Mar. 26, 2007) summarizes how the brain fends of distractions but like much scientific research it seems utterly pointless.

How many studies do we need to finally realize that being tired or 'mentally fatigued' affects our performance in some way? Here's the article in summary:

How the brain fends off distractions:

Dutch researcher Harm Veling has demonstrated that our brains fend off distractions. If we are busy with something we suppress disrupting external influences. If we are tired, we can no longer do this...In the event of tiredness, this system no longer seems to work.

Veling asked study subjects to remember words that were strongly associated with each other. For example, fruit-mango, fruit-peach, animal-giraffe, animal-sheep. Subsequently all of these words passed by on a screen and the study subjects had to intend to press a button for a number of these words (for example, mango). Mango is referred to here as an ´intended´ word. Peach is a very similar word and can confuse the study subject. Therefore Veling termed this a distracting word. Sheep has got nothing to do with mango and is therefore a neutral word.

The test revealed that the study subjects remembered distracting words less well than intended and neutral words. Moreover, people who were better at excluding these words from their brains performed the task quicker. Suppressing distraction is therefore useful.

People who were mentally fatigued were no longer able to suppress the distraction. Moreover they scored less well in their task. Suppression is therefore not automatic and costs energy. A humorous example of the principles Veling investigated is the Dutch TV quiz programme Rad van Fortuin (Wheel of Fortune). The candidates of this quiz are brutally distracted whilst answering the questions and can therefore scarcely answer the simplest of questions.

There you have it. Pointless...now here's a picture to distract you and hopefully start you wondering about whether they fell or for that matter would you have the guts to do something like that? Are they more alive than you?
